Lack of civic education in schools, limited out-of-school learning opportunities and a lack of positive role models are obstacles to civic involvement and participation. Civic indifference exacerbates the socio-economic crisis, leading to corruption, social injustice, and a low standard of living for citizens. The lack of civic involvement of young people leads to deepening the gaps between municipalities and small towns.
The IRAD project supports young citizens by implementing education and civic involvement activities in Băilești and Segarcea from Dolj County, with a high marginalization rate and insufficiently served areas, where there was a lack of civic spirit among young people, lack of a practical approach to teaching civics and online misinformation.

Training Course "Human rights and civic participation in schools"

We all need more knowledge about how the society we live in works and our role as citizens of a democratic state. The earlier we educate ourselves civically, the easier it will be for us to assimilate theoretical notions and develop the skills and attitudes necessary for an informed and involved citizen.

13 representatives of the high schools in the target group: Technological High School "Ștefan Anghel" Băilești, Theoretical High School "Mihai Viteazul" Băilești, respectively Technological High School "Horia Vintilă" Segarcea and 4 members of the Active Yourope Association participated in the training course "Human rights and participation civics in schools" held between June 2-5, 2022 in Sinaia.

This course was held within the framework of the IRAD project - "Get involved responsibly, act and decide!", a project run by the Active Yourope Association in partnership with the Icelandic Human Rights Centre, with the financial support of Active Citizens Fund Romania, a program financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants 2014-2021. The aim of the project is to increase the degree of civic involvement and participation in voting among young people, by providing access to correct and true information in the online environment and by simulating and implementing civic activities, for the development of the local community.

The training course aimed to encourage critical thinking and active citizenship in local communities by supporting teachers and members of civil society in their efforts to know and understand how to use non-formal tools to teach notions of democratic culture and the rule of law and at the same time work with local authorities.

The two trainers, Romanian and Icelandic, addressed topics such as: the principles of the rule of law, participatory democracy, public participation and decision-making transparency, active citizenship, leadership and community development, civic involvement of young people, methods of non-formal teaching of civic skills, examples of active citizenship in Iceland.

There were 3 days full of inspiration in which we discovered and experienced the learning methods specific to non-formal education, which uses play and the diversity of stimuli to create the framework conducive to experiential learning. The participants learned about leadership, what qualities a leader must have, what is the role of a leader; they defined the community, they experienced voting in Parliament using methods such as learning by doing, thermometer line, forum theatre.

Also, our Icelandic expert Íris Ósk Ingadóttir shared good practices that are ready to be applied! The tested human rights education methods and activities were included in a non-formal activity guide that can be used by other actors in the field of education, this contributing to the development of young people's skills to become promoters of human rights

Study Visit in Iceland

Between 25-27 October 2022, representatives of the local public administration from the towns of Băilești and Segarcea, and of the three high schools from the target group "Ștefan Anghel" Technological High School, "Mihai Viteazul" Theoretical High School and "Horia Vintilă" Technological High School, together with members of the Association Active Yourope participated in a study visit to the Icelandic partner "Icelandic Human Rights Centre", an umbrella institute that coordinates the activity of more than 15 national NGOs and that periodically elaborates research and public policy proposals to improve the lives of various disadvantaged social categories.

The purpose of the visit was to directly observe good practices in the field of human rights.

In the first part of the meeting, all participants presented the mission and activity in the country of the institutions they represent, thus encouraging the exchange of best practices. Also, the project partner, "Icelandic Human Rights Centre" presented us the materials published by them.

The agenda of the meeting also included a visit to Mosfellsbær Preparatory High School where the focus is on project-based learning. Flexibility and innovative teaching methods are guiding elements of the design of the internal structure of the building.  The design recognises each child as a unique individual with unique needs and desires regarding its environment. The school's philosophy and teaching methods are characterized by the fact that students are active participants in their own learning, gain independence and control their learning pace under the guidance of teachers and study and career advisors. A variety of project-based teaching methods and continuous assessment based on guided learning ideas are the school's distinctive features.

We also had the opportunity to participate in the Gender Equality Forum that took place on October 26 in Reykjavik. Gender equality advocates, EU and national policy makers, experts and many others shared their expertise and exchanged views on the most pressing issues affecting progress in gender equality.

The visit to the Faculty of Education Sciences at the University of Reykjavik gave us the opportunity to learn more about the Icelandic education system and about the role of non-formal education in the development of young people.

Finally, we identified good practices in the field of social assistance of the municipality of Reykjavik following a visit to a social centre.

In the end, our visit was extremely productive, pleasant, and effective, as we discovered some valuable lessons and examples of good practices in the field of promoting human rights, and we managed to lay the foundations of a collaborative relationship in which we can use these results as reference for a future project together. Finally, we enjoyed the culture and charm of Reykjavik, as well as the wonderful and serene landscape of the country, rightly called the land of ice and fire!

In the last part of the meeting, the participants brainstormed to find different possibilities for cooperation in the future, proposing both projects in the sphere of human rights and participatory democracy.
