Environmental Education and Sustainability through Erasmus+ in Prague

An Active Yourope trainer took part in an Erasmus+ mobility in Prague on environmental education, sustainability and community engagement.

Asociația Active Yourope took part in the training mobility “Environmental Education, Sustainability and Community Engagement for Adults”, held in Prague, Czech Republic, under the Erasmus+ KA121-ADU project 2025-1-RO01-KA121-ADU-000339236.

The activity set out to develop trainers’ skills in environmental education, sustainability and community engagement, with an emphasis on non-formal methods that work in practice with adults and seniors.

The course was hosted by the partner organisation Spolek absolventů a přátel zemědělské školy v Chrudimi z.s., a Czech organisation experienced in education, ecology, environmental protection, community development and learning activities for the wider public.

Aims of the Erasmus+ mobility

Taking part in this mobility followed Active Yourope’s strategic priorities: diversifying the educational offer, developing trainers’ skills and raising the quality of adult education activities.

Through this course, the participating trainer set out to:

  • understand the principles of environmental education and education for sustainable development;
  • deepen concepts such as sustainability, biodiversity, the circular economy, responsible consumption and climate change adaptation;
  • design non-formal, experiential activities for adults and seniors;
  • apply methods of community engagement and behaviour change;
  • transfer the learning outcomes into Active Yourope’s activities and educational offer.

The mobility strengthened Active Yourope’s profile as an organisation active in adult education, lifelong learning and sustainable community development.

Activities during the course

In the first days, the participant worked on the foundations of environmental education: sustainable development, the sustainable development goals, the European GreenComp framework, active citizenship and the role adults play in protecting community resources.

A significant part of the course was devoted to environmentally responsible behaviour, through activities on responsible consumption, the circular economy, the waste hierarchy and the rational use of resources.

The programme also covered water as a community resource, water protection, saving resources and the impact of climate change on local communities. These themes were approached through case studies, applied discussion and examples of activities that can be adapted for adults and seniors.

In the practical part of the mobility, the participant explored biodiversity, landscape protection, urban ecology and public green spaces, focusing on how citizens can be involved in protecting their local environment.

The final days of the course were devoted to designing an educational module transferable to the sending organisation. The trainer worked on an action plan that will allow the methods learned to be integrated into Active Yourope’s activities.

Skills developed

Through this Erasmus+ mobility, the trainer developed skills in designing non-formal environmental education activities, facilitating experiential learning, communicating sustainability topics and involving adults in community action.

The mobility also contributed to intercultural communication skills and to stronger European cooperation in adult education.

Transferring the results into Active Yourope

The results of the mobility will be integrated into Active Yourope’s work through workshops and educational resources for adults, seniors and people with fewer opportunities.

The methods learned will support the diversification of the association’s educational offer and will feed into local activities on environmental protection, responsible consumption, biodiversity and community engagement.

Environmental education, inclusion and active citizenship

For Active Yourope, environmental education is not only an ecological topic - it is part of active citizenship. Protecting resources, caring for shared spaces, reducing waste and getting involved in the community are behaviours that can be developed through education, dialogue and participation.

The Prague course offered useful examples of how adults can be supported to understand environmental issues and to become more active in their communities. This approach matters especially for activities aimed at adults, seniors and people with fewer opportunities - groups for whom learning has to be accessible, practical and connected to everyday life.

Conclusion

The Erasmus+ mobility in Prague reinforces Active Yourope’s commitment to adult education, sustainable development and more active, more responsible communities.
