Erasmus+ course in Porto: Game-based learning and digital innovation in education

Between 22 and 31 July 2024, Dragoș Cuță, trainer and project coordinator at Asociația Active Yourope, attended a structured course held in the vibrant city of Porto, Portugal. This course, part of the Erasmus+ programme (project no. 2023-1-RO01-KA121-ADU-000146934), was dedicated to game-based learning and digital innovation in education, giving participants valuable knowledge and skills for integrating these modern methods into education systems across Europe.

Main objectives of the course

  • Understanding the principles of game-based learning - participants explored the theoretical foundations and advantages of this method, learning to integrate games effectively into the curriculum.
  • Developing gamification skills - trainers gained competences in designing and delivering engaging educational activities, using gamification strategies to boost learners’ motivation and performance.
  • Using digital tools in education - the course included sessions dedicated to using innovative digital platforms to improve the educational process.
  • Creating interactive learning experiences - participants learned to combine digital technologies and game-based learning to create engaging and dynamic learning environments.

Modules and educational activities

The course ran over 10 days and included practical workshops, theoretical sessions and interactive activities. The topics covered included:

  • gamification and the application of playful techniques in education;
  • the use of digital platforms such as Kahoot, Quizizz and Classcraft;
  • the integration of virtual and augmented reality into the educational process;
  • the development of practical activities, such as interactive quizzes, role-play and collaborative projects.

The benefits of gamification in education

Gamification transforms the educational process by integrating game elements, such as:

  • points and leaderboards, to encourage friendly competition;
  • levels and badges, which motivate learners to progress;
  • rewards, tangible or virtual, for reaching objectives.

These elements increase engagement and help create an attractive and interactive learning environment.
