Erasmus+ course materials on modern approaches to adult education

Two trainers from Asociația Active Yourope recently attended the course “Modern Approaches to Adult Education: Strategies for Success”, under the Erasmus+ Accreditation, project no. 2023-1-RO01-KA121-ADU-000146934, where they gained essential knowledge and innovative methods for adult education. The main aim of the course was to equip trainers with modern strategies for developing and delivering effective educational programmes.

The course covered the essential principles of andragogy, which differs from pedagogy by focusing on the specific needs and characteristics of adults. The trainers explored current trends in adult education, such as lifelong learning and the use of digital platforms.

The trainers learned how to implement active and collaborative learning techniques that stimulate adults’ active participation and engagement in the learning process. Through hands-on activities and group discussions, these methods make it easier to apply theory in practical scenarios.

An essential part of the course was curriculum development and instructional design. The trainers were taught to carry out needs assessments and to set clear learning objectives, integrating modern technology to improve the educational experience.

The course highlighted the importance of formative and summative assessment, providing constructive feedback mechanisms to ensure the continuous improvement of educational programmes. The trainers learned to create assessments that effectively measure learning outcomes.

The trainers were trained in the use of e-learning tools and learning management systems (LMS). These tools make it possible to create a blended learning environment that combines online and face-to-face learning, increasing the efficiency of the educational process. The learning management systems (LMS) covered included:

  • Moodle - an open-source platform for managing courses, assessments and tracking learner progress;
  • Canvas - a robust, easy-to-use LMS with tools for creating courses, assessments and collaboration;
  • Blackboard - an LMS platform offering tools for course administration, assessment and interaction between students and teachers.

Particular attention was given to designing an inclusive curriculum that responds to cultural diversity and the specific needs of learners. The trainers were taught to adapt teaching materials to support learners with disabilities and to apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

They were encouraged to adopt reflective practices for continuous professional growth and to collaborate within professional networks. Sessions with guest speakers and networking opportunities offered valuable perspectives and strengthened professional connections within the educational community.

Attending this course considerably enriched the skills of Active Yourope’s trainers, enabling them to apply modern and effective strategies in adult education.
